Why Is Choosing the Right Carrier So Important?

The right carrier is more than just a transport service: it is a strategic partner that affects your customer satisfaction, operating costs, and company reputation. A poor choice can lead to delayed deliveries, damaged goods, or hidden costs.

Forwarder or Carrier?

A carrier physically moves the goods with its own or hired vehicles and is liable for the carriage under the CMR Convention. A forwarder organises the transport: it selects the carrier, agrees the route and dates and handles the paperwork, but does not have to own any vehicles. So when you request a quote, find out who you are signing the contract with and who is liable for the shipment. EVEREST Solutions is both: we haul with our own tractor units and, depending on the route, add vetted partner carriers.

What to Ask Before You Order

1. Licences and Certifications

Verify that the carrier holds:

  • A valid Community licence for international road transport (it applies to the carrier; a pure forwarder does not need one, but its carrier should have it)
  • Carrier liability insurance (CMR insurance)
  • ADR certification, if you are shipping dangerous goods

2. Fleet and Capacity

  • Does the carrier use its own vehicles, or does it arrange them through partners?
  • Which trailer types does it offer (for example curtainsider, Coil Mulde)?
  • Does it have sufficient capacity for your needs?

3. Route Coverage

Ask about:

  • Which destinations the carrier serves regularly and which on request
  • Express shipping options
  • Which delivery dates are binding and which are only indicative

4. Experience

  • How many years has the carrier been in the market?
  • Does it have experience with your type of goods?
  • What are its ratings on business platforms?

5. Insurance and Liability

  • Under the CMR Convention the carrier is liable for damage to the shipment up to 8.33 SDR per kilogram of gross weight. Ask whether this liability is insured
  • Does the carrier offer additional cargo insurance, for example on request?
  • How does it handle claims and damaged shipments?
  • What is the claims resolution timeframe?

6. Information About Your Shipment

  • How, and by whom, will you be told the status of your shipment?
  • EVEREST Solutions offers real-time GPS shipment tracking

7. Pricing and Payment Terms

  • Compare prices from multiple carriers
  • Watch out for hidden fees (tolls, fuel surcharge)
  • What are the invoice payment terms?
  • Does the carrier offer volume discounts?

How to Check a Supplier

Before you entrust a shipment to an unknown company, check the basics yourself:

  • Company register: the company really exists, for how long, and with what registered office and statutory body
  • VAT ID: you can verify the validity of an EU VAT number in the VIES system
  • Insurance certificate: ask for a copy of the carrier liability insurance confirmation and check its validity and limit
  • Community licence: the carrier should be able to show it

A serious company will provide these documents without hesitation.

How EVEREST Solutions Works

We haul shipments with our own tractor units and, depending on the route, add vetted partner carriers. The carrier's liability is insured under CMR (8.33 SDR/kg), we arrange cargo insurance on request, and we send the quote the same working day.

Depending on the size of your shipment you can choose full truck load (FTL) or groupage (LTL); the differences are explained in our FTL vs LTL comparison.

Conclusion

Choosing a carrier is an investment in the quality of your logistics. Don't hesitate to ask questions, check your supplier, and test services on smaller shipments before entrusting a carrier with larger volumes.
